We saw an increase in fashion jewelry on the runaway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Usually runway jewelry tends to be very minimal as not to draw attention away from the designers clothing itself. This year proved to be a popular year for fashion jewelry particularly thick chains, cuff bracelets, layered necklaces and dangle earrings.

Fashion jewelry or costume jewelry is a term used to describe jewelry worn to compliment a particular costume or outfit. Usually, costume jewelry does not consist of real gemstones or metals but instead uses other decorative items such as rocks, shells, glass or beads. It is relatively inexpensive and can be disposed of easily if it is broken or no longer needed. The main purpose of this particular type of jewelry is to make a statement via your jewelry and not necessarily your outfit.

During fashion week we did not see any particular metal or hue favored. Everything was pretty varied; there were rose gold mixes as well as silver and other colored golds, unlike previous fall seasons where rose gold usually steals the show. Each type of metal as well mixed with various colors to create an elegant yet bold backdrop for the attire. This season will be one full of mix-and-match jewelry.

The layered necklace look was a favorite and was seen on many designers’ models including Carmen Marc Valvo. The layered necklaces were used to decorate an otherwise casual khaki-colored safari jacket and tank top. Amongst layered necklaces we also saw a hug increase in the number of designers using long, dangly earrings on both the runway and off. Bangle bracelets were displayed on the runway. One model wearing a strapless, belted, gray lace dress accented her arm with a black-coral and gold bangle bracelet.

While there was an increase in bigger and bulkier fashion jewelry some designers took the old-school minimalist path of elegance and used diamond accented earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Regardless of the particular style of jewelry chosen, designers are making it clear this is the season to get out your jewelry box and start accessorizing. It is also a great time to get out your wish list and start making a list of the jewelry you want to receive for the holidays. Whether you choose fashion jewelry or refined jewelry you will be dazzling this season.
